I'm a mother of a 15 month old little boy, Gianncarlo. He was born with a Cleft Lip and Palate. I hope to inform, educate, and/or support other families going through the same curiosity as I did while being pregnant. I've learned a lot about my son's condition, and am in college to hopefully become a reconstructive surgeon to help other Cleft babies.

This is an updated photo of my little angel. As you can see, his scar is still pretty swollen. All in all, it takes about a year for the scar to heal. It's only been about 9 months since the surgeon closed his lip and nose.

It's hard to tell what causes clefts. My family and I believe that it was caused from a car accident my mother was in when I was first developing. No serious injuries, but enough to disrupt me. My Older brother was also born with a cleft, but he only had the cleft lip. You can't even tell with him. We think that his was caused because of a medication my mother was on, plus she didn't know she was pregnant. For the longest time, doctors would always say that it was genetic, but we never believed. Now finally they are realizing that it can be caused by other things. I don't to talk to very many people that have or have been around clefts, so it's nice hearing from you.
